Prevent Basement Flooding

April showers bring May flowers! The spring time can be a very moist season. This week for example, has a large amount of rain predicted in the forecast. Forecasters have even issued a flash flooding storm watch lasting several days.

All of this rain may have you thinking about ways you can prevent basement flooding this spring. Whether you have a finished or unfinished basement area, a flooded basement can be very stressful.

Take the following steps to prevent a flooded basement:

• Keep gutters and downspouts free from any debris. Clear out any leaves, gravel or anything else that may have formed a blockade in your gutters and downspouts.
• Make sure downspouts face away from your home. If the ground around your downspout has a slant, make sure that when the downspout empties the water is not going to flow back towards your home.
• Fill cracks in the foundation with an epoxy.
• Check your sump pump. Make sure the area is cleared from debris and that your pump is in good working order. You may want to have a back up sump pump or an alternative electrical source for the sump pump in case the power goes out.
• Examine sewer systems and septic tanks.
• Install window wells on any windows that lead to a lower level. Check the window to make sure it is water tight.
• Check over your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure you have the correct coverage. We often find that homeowners do not have a sump pump rider on their policy; therefore there is no coverage when a sump pump fails.

It is important to take the right precautions. Completing these steps will not be full proof to preventing water damage. However, it will minimize the risks.

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home.

Fire Damage in Rochester

An unknown electrical issue caused the fire damage in this house in Rochester.  The fire luckily happened while the homeowner was not home. 

This photo was taken in the kitchen and although it looks as if the fire may have  started here, it actually started in the family room next to the kitchen.  The fire damage was so severe, there was very little able to be salvaged from the affected rooms in the home.  The most salvageable items will be found in the basement , since smoke rises and the 2nd floor was heavily affected as well.

Commercial Flood Damage at a Rochester Retail Store

Space Heater Safety Tips

9 Do's When it Comes to Space Heaters

1) Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from combustible materials, including beds, sofas, curtains, papers, clothes, etc.

2) Make sure the heaters power cord is not damaged or frayed in any way.

3) Make sure the heater is securely plugged into the power outlet. Ensure it does not come loose or fall out. 

4) Ensure your heater is on a stable and level surface with minimal risk of it getting knocked over.

5) Make sure your space heater has been certified as safe to use. You should see a safety logo on the back somewhere.

6) Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

7) Ensure your unit is turned off when you go to sleep, in a different room, or unable to keep an eye on it.

8) It is wise to teach everyone in your household how to properly operate your heater.

Say the words flood damage and people rightly think of foot deep water in their basement or entire neighborhoods underwater. This time of year, it can be a common, even multiple occurrences in some parts of New York.

 FLOODING Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your neighborhood is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:

1. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.

2.Stay away from floodwaters.

3. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

4. Keep children out of the water.

5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

What is the Science of Drying? 

The knowledge  of  psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of Northeast Monroe County is trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances  of any secondary damages.

Commercial Duct Cleaning

Soda Blasting, What's That?

I don't know about you, but the first thing I think about when someone says 'soda blasting' is a bunch of kids running around shaking up cans of soda and spraying them at each other. If you were thinking along the same lines as me, you will be surprised to find out that soda blasting is a very helpful way to clean a fire damaged building. 

Soda blasting is a process in which sodium bicarbonate is applied against a surface using compressed air. FEMA Tips for Flood Preparation

Before the Flood:

• Have a qualified professional elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel if susceptible to flooding. 
• Install "check valves" in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up into the drain of your home or business 
• Seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds to help avoid seepage. 

During the Flood:

• Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
• Disconnect electrical appliances.
• Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
• Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of water can make you fall.

After the Flood:

• Listen for news reports to learn if the community's water supply is safe to drink. 
• Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged.
• Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
• Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum). Even though some forms of mold can pass value to our lives, other forms of mold can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

Do's and Don'ts of Fire & Smoke Damage

Do:

• Limit the movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
• Keeps hands clean, Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
• Place dry, colorfast towels on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
• If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open.
• Clean soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances and protect with a light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
• Pour RV antifreeze into sinks, toilet bowls and tubs if heat is off during freezing season.
• Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
• Change HVAC filters.
• Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system. 

Don't:

• Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting SERVPRO of S.E. Monroe County!

There are some simple steps you can take until help arrives: 

• If the source of the water is still leaking, identify the source and stop it if you can.
• If the water is coming from a burst or leaking pipe, turn off the water at its source. 
• If the water is coming through the roof or broken window, try to cover them to prevent further damage.
• Move wet items to drier areas.
• Place aluminum foil coasters or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
• Save damaged items and any parts you may need to replace - your claim representative may want to inspect them.
• Do not use electrical equipment or appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors.
• To document the damage, make a list of the temporary repairs you make and take photographs.
• Make sure to save your receipts.

What is the Science of Drying? 

The knowledge  of  psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. Psychrometrics are terms used to describe the field of engineering concerned with the determination of physical and thermodynamic properties of gas-vapor mixtures. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and  then place a fan or two around the damaged area, Victor/Canandaigua are highly trained in the science of drying. Commercial Large Loss

A water main break on Sunday caused this commercial building to have a major flood.  This affected their main store area, kitchen,  cafeteria, and a few offices.  The water and dirt brought in from outside left a lot of damage to their business. 

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua was called on Monday to help clean up the mess.  And the business owners were very glad they were able to save their merchandise from any further damage.  They couldn't believe we were able to respond so quickly and with a large amount of drying equipment. Our customer was thrilled with the results.

SERVPRO of Victor/Canandaigua was able to make it "Like it never even happened" and they were fully operational within the same week as the loss.

What To Do Before A Storm Hits

BEFORE THE STORM

• To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan

• Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.

• Postpone outdoor activities.

• Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.

• Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.

• Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.

• Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.

• Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.

• Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives

DURING THE STORM

• Use a battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.
• Avoid contact with corded phones. Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cellular telephones are safe to use.
• Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords.  Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners.  Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
• Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry.  Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
• Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
• Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.
• Avoid hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water.
• Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open spaces. 
• Avoid contact with anything metal - tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
• If you are not driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park.  Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.

• Never drive through a flooded roadway.
• stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of severe thunderstorms.
• Continue to listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or to local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions, as access to roads or some parts of the community may be blocked.
• Help people who may require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or those with access or functional needs.
• Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
• Watch your animals closely.  Keep them under your direct control.

BOMA and Honor Flight Rochester

Mike Necci, President of BOMA & VP of SERVPRO of S.E. Monroe County, presents Honor Flight Rochester with donation check.

Every year the Business Owners and Managers Association of Rochester picks a charitable organization to donate to at all events throughout the year.  BOMA's 2015 organization that received the donation was Honor Flight Rochester.  Honor Flight Rochester works with the local community in aiding veteran solider on flights to Washington DC to visit and reflect at their memorials. BOMA was able raise nearly $2000 in donations and the donation was presented to them at our Holiday Luncheon. As members of BOMA, SERVPRO of S.E. Monroe County was able to experience the opportunity to help out this great cause.  Honor Flight Rochester was very appreciative of the donations made by BOMA, and they will have the honor to be their charitable organization again for 2016!
